If you think of buttery-slick popcorn-flavored wine rocking 15% ABV when you think of California Chardonnay, and if you think of big-and-boozy vanilla-laced reds when you hear the phrase 'California Pinot Noir', your world just might be turned upside down if you hit up the In Pursuit of Balance tasting in NYC on the evening of February 4th.

IPOB was founded in 2011 by Rajat Parr (of RN74) and Jasmine Hirsch (of Hirsch Vineyards), and the February 4th edition of the tasting in New York will feature 31 California wineries. You can read a bit more about the types of wines that will be poured in this manifesto.

We asked Jasmine Hirsch what she was especially excited for this year. High on her list: "Our new wineries include the ultimate in old-guard California Chard and Pinot Noir, Hanzell. And also Matthiasson and Domaine de la Cote, who are some of the most exciting new projects in California wine." She also noted that the tasting is a rare opportunity for New Yorkers to talk in person with some of the top winemakers in California, "and to taste many wines that are generally unavailable to taste due to incredibly limited production." It's also a great chance, she says, to "discover some the newest and hottest wine projects in California (like Matthiasson, Liquid Farm, and Ceritas)—and get on their mailing lists before they fill up."

If you're going to the tasting, Hirsch says not to miss the wines of young winemaker Katy Wilson of LaRue. "She makes around 300 cases of wine a year, and this is one of the only tastings she pours her wines at. Incredibly elegant, gorgeous wines that will be considered classics once she's discovered."

Tickets for the tasting, which will be held at Three Sixty in Tribeca, are available online for $115. But we have a pair of tickets to giveaway to one lucky community member.
