It happens every year like clockwork: I make too many plans, have too many houseguests, go out to too many late dinners and taste too many wines, trying to write too many stories leading into the holiday season. Every year, during exactly this week as the deadlines are stacking up, I get sick. The pressure in the eardrums. The pinch in the neck. And then...nothing. It's like being underwater, except that I'm just stuck in my own sinuses. I can't breathe, I can't taste, I can't smell. Gotta love fall.
Friends sent advice: how about a hot toddy? What about sherry? (Seems to work for W. Blake Gray.) Try orange juice and zinc! Or green juice. Or green tea. White tea. Google '101 Cookbooks turmeric tea'—that stuff, my friends say, works miracles.
I like slicing up some fresh ginger and steeping it in a teapot—something about the heat seems to penetrate the corners of my brain that are foggy. Turmeric sounds like a smart addition, except for the fact that it might taste a little funny.
Do you have a drinking routine when you catch a cold? What's your remedy?
