Those four little words—Reese's Peanut Butter Cups—have a way of making people's eyes light up. So it makes sense to market the beloved candy as broadly as possible; think of the success of the Reese's Blizzard at Dairy Queen or the Reese's ice cream bars from Breyer's. This month, mall cinnamon roll hawker Cinnabon jumps on the bandwagon with the limited-time-only Peanut Butter Cup Chillatta, the latest in its line of sweetened iced beverages.
Unlike a regular milkshake, which this most certainly is not, the Chillatta starts with lots of ice and a little sweet cream. Vanilla syrup and crumbled Reese's Peanut Butter Cups join the ice combo in the blender for several seconds, long enough to incorporate the ingredients and liquify the ice. Finally, the Cinnabon server swirls some chocolate syrup ribbons onto the inside of a plastic cup, pours in the blended mixture, and tops it off with a mound of whipped cream.
Like Cinnabon's Mint Oreo Chillatta, the Peanut Butter Cup Chillatta suffers from the inescapable fact that it is mostly water, and therefore comes across as thin and bland. Our tasting crew had mixed reactions to the crumbled bits of Reese's Peanut Butter Cups floating around in the Chillatta: some enjoyed them because of the pops of flavor they provided, while others found their texture grainy and unpleasant in the watery liquid. Hints of peanut butter and chocolate are there at the back of the palate, but this is clearly meant to be more of a thirst-quencher than an after-meal treat. That actually kind of makes sense given that Cinnabon's decadent rolls are rich enough on their own that the typically thick, creamy milkshake would make a poor companion.
With much of the country ascending into record-high temperatures, Cinnabon's new Peanut Butter Cup Chillatta works best as a treat for kids who want to cool down and haven't yet OD'd on summer smores. For everyone else who wants a little more flavor in their drinks, Cinnabon's fruit-based Chillattas are a much better bet. If you're still interested in giving it a shot, don't put it off too long; the beverage is only available until September 7.
