Some people—normal people—crave sweets. It's evolutionary. You'd seek out high-sugar foods in the wild, or you'd die of starvation. Me? I wouldn't have lasted a month. I crave umami. Salt. Tang. There's definitely something wrong with me.
Thankfully my CSA boxes and takeout Indian food get delivered, so I'm not overly worried about starving to death. (Also, thankfully I'm in my mid-30s now, so I'm not overly worried about whether there's something wrong with me, either. That's evolutionary, too.)
You hear a lot these days about how sweets are too easy to come by in the Standard American Diet. That's a can of worms for another day. But what you don't hear about so much, and maybe you should start to listen for, is the lack of tangy smoothies out there for those of us with some evolutionary challenges. A Google search for "tangy smoothies" doesn't even break a million results. By comparison, a search for "things that are extremely rare" produces 6.3 million results. I mean, come on.
If you want a tangy smoothie—pleasantly sweet, sure, but also nice and brisk—sometimes it pays to just go ahead and invent one. So I did. This Vegan Strawberry Lemonade Smoothie uses both fresh lemon juice and a dollop of soy yogurt for tang. The yogurt also contributes a slight creaminess, which even strange and broken products of botched evolution like myself (yay!) expect from a smoothie. If you ask me, it's perfect. And if you like lemonade, tart frozen yogurt, or both, I think you'll agree. Even if you're one of the normal ones.
