When I moved to San Francisco this past July, I was daunted by the vast array of local bars. There were high-end cocktail destinations I knew I'd enjoy checking out, but I also noticed that most folks I asked were extraordinarily proud of San Francisco's dive bars, some with long and creepy histories, most with funky decor, and a few with hidden back patios and shockingly cheap local beer on tap.
So I undertook this project with a bit of a selfish aim: to find out where the pros drink so I could follow in their footsteps. I asked 22 San Francisco bartenders, bar managers, and bar owners where they love to go for cocktails, beer, and wine in the Bay area, from swanky cocktail lounges to the dingiest of dive bars.
