Hangover Helper

Just what the doctor ordered.

The 24th Street corridor in San Francisco's Mission neighborhood offers some of the city's best options for creating as well are medicating your hangover. With places like Dynamo Donuts and La Palma offering comfort food both sweet and savory, and Pop's bacon-laced Bloody Marys, this strip has become something of a weekend ritual for me.

My new favorite spot, though, is Wise Sons, whether I'm ready to handle a pastrami burger or can only face matzo ball soup. Their ultimate hangover-soother is the pastrami cheese fries. For $7 you get a big plate full of fries topped with chopped pastrami and drizzled with a Swiss-cheese bechamel (most folks would probably call that a Mornay sauce).

The hand-cut fries came out perfectly golden and crispy enough to stand up to the sauce. The pastrami was smoky and just greasy enough, chopped up small and evenly distributed. Chopped homemade pickles and green onions added cut the richness of the dish (which you can also add back with the side of Russian dressing that's provided.) Additional pickled serrano peppers are optional, but worth considering. Think of the dish as hipster-Jewish poutine/chile cheese fries, animal-style, and put it on your weekend calendar.
