As anyone who survived the recent NYC heat wave can attest, there is no time like a summer day for an icy beverage (which during the day for us generally means nonalcoholic, but we won't judge you).
Luckily, it seems that every restaurant and coffee shop, chain or otherwise, continues to introduce new drinks to quench this additional summer thirst. Here at Serious Eats HQ, we took a taste of the new McCafé Chocolate Chip Frappé currently being offered for a limited time by those unavoidable golden arches.
Part of McDonald's "Flavors of Summer" campaign, the drink ($2.89 for a small) comes topped with a glob of whipped cream along with chocolate and caramel sauces. Underneath the candy-sweet topping, you'll find an icy-meets-milky concoction that may or may not be your idea of a good time depending on your personal preferences. Fans of the Dunkin' Donuts Coolata will feel right at home, as this achieves a similar texture, ending up looking and tasting like a mocha mixed with crushed ice. However, if you're in search of a milkshake, you've come to the wrong place.
Chocolate is the dominant flavor, on its own not too sweet but easily elevated into the sugar stratosphere by stirring in the whipped cream and syrups up top. A slightly bitter aftertaste is the only signal that coffee is involved.
The frappé is advertised as having chocolate chips blended into it, but we didn't detect any real chunks that could've added some textural interest. Perhaps they just were blended so finely that they just got lost in the sweet and icy shuffle.
