Two halves usually do a pretty good job of making a whole, even when you're nursing a hangover and you find that the pieces of last night don't all fit together.
At Short Order, the recently-opened boozy brunch and burger spot in the Farmer's Market at Third and Fairfax, they've got all sorts of greasy geometry to help sharpen the edges of last night's memory. Chefs Nancy Silverton and the late Amy Pressman have worked hard to create locally-focused American fare with a touch of kitchen flourish. King among their weekend plates is the Benedict Burger ($11), a delightful breakfast / lunch mashup dish that involves (you guessed it) a lot of egg.
The open-faced 'burger' is presented in two halves on top of a housemade toasted English muffin, layered with local cheddar cheese, a runny little cage-free egg and enough Hollandaise sauce to make the Dutch stand up and take notice. Depending on your definition, the Benedict Burger patty may be DQ'd for a lack of beef, but that doesn't stop this ham and breakfast sausage mix from packing a salty, porky, savory meat wallop. A few run-throughs with a knife to get the egg and Hollandaise involved should be all you need to square up that hangover nicely. The result is a deeply satisfying Sunday morning combination of protein and grain and whatever food group 'egg sauce' belongs in.
If last night's antics didn't scare everyone off, you should also consider splitting the Short Stack pancakes with any willing brunch participants. Hot and soft with real maple syrup to spare, the Stack is deceptively simple and makes for great shared eating.
