Riesling Report: Rudi Veit Piesporter Goldtropfchen Riesling Spatlese, 2008

This summer, we tried a different bottle of riesling every weekday. There are still many great bottles to explore, so we'll chime in here with the occasional report. Got a favorite riesling? Recommend it in the comments!

The scent of this wine is like a bowl of roasted apricots—you expect sweetness. But this one rings right into balance with a bright, fruity acidity. It's as luscious as a dripping ripe peach, but as tart as one, too. It's a smooth, golden wine that's not cloying, with a delicate minerality that's woven through every sip, soft hints of slate and peach skin. There's a slight petrol note (one taster was reminded of truffle oil) and a little clay, but what lingers is fragrant just-tart fruit.

If you're going upscale, serve with lobster ravioli in a light cream sauce. But the perfect pairing might be fried chicken and buttery biscuits.

Around $18, sample provided for review.
