Every time I find myself in a Whole Foods out west, I fall into a fit of beer-jealousy. The beers you West Coasters can buy! At the grocery store! I picked up a little Russian River Consecration and this guy, a bomber of 6.5% ABV IPA from a Bend Brewery I've been hearing good things about.
The scent is candied orange and caramel, but the flavor is not as sweet as you expect after a whiff. Bready malt serves as the backbone (think multigrain toast), with hints of sage and lavender, and a swirl of earthy caramel notes. It's creamy but it has real bitterness on the finish. This beer is filled with baked-orange flavor, but some might wish for more snappy brightness. If you like your IPA to hint at orange marmalade, this is the beer for you.
Pair with grilled shrimp and avocado salad.
