At Kin Shop, the dessert menu is comprised of ice creams and sorbets. But look carefully—there is a Root Beer Float ($8) tucked in the middle of it all. And it's not just any root beer float, but one made with a scoop of the housemade galangal ice cream.

Galangal is better known by its Thai name, khaa, and though it has a physical appearance similar to ginger, it's more peppery and sweet in flavor. Combined with a tall glass of root beer, the slowly melting galangal ice cream imparts a slow release of heat into the icy concoction. Stir it up—I like to eat half the ice cream just plain before mixing the rest into the root beer. That way you get the best of both worlds.

As an added bonus the drink/dessert comes with two fresh chewy ginger cookies, served warm.
