The Taiwanese bubble tea chain Coco Fresh Tea and Juice has finally arrived in Flushing, conveniently located by Main Street subway station. As its name suggests, the Grapefruit Yakult ($4.50) brings together grapefruit juice with a bottle of Yakult, a type of fermented-milk drink popular in Japan. The overall tangy flavor is balanced by a moderate amount of syrup, and the grapefruit pulp jazzes up the chewy texture of tapioca pearls in the drink.
If you prefer something to cleanse your palate, try their Bubble Gaga ($3.50), which pairs green tea with passionfruit juice, coconut jelly, and tapioca pearls. We were surprised by how well the gently sweet passionfruit complements the green tea's mildly bitter flavor.
The service there is efficient even when the space is packed, and the people there are more than happy to accommodate any special request, whether you want it to be less sweetened or want more pearls than jellies. Have your cash ready, because like many stores in Flushing, this place doesn't take credit cards.
