Kopp's Custard is an institution in Milwaukee. It's regularly voted best custard in the city—no small feat in a city so obsessed with the frozen treat. The love is unending and completely deserved. With custard this good, the shakes and malts are some of the best in the city. We've mentioned the wintry eggnog milkshake, but there are many more flavors to be enjoyed.
A couple of times a year, Kopp's offers a special shake flavor, Blue Moon, in its rotating lineup of seasonal tastes. The bright, almost neon-turquoise shake is a regional favorite that most people outside of the upper Midwest have never heard of. No one really knows what the flavor is...Marshmallow? Blue Curacao? I'd say the flavor of this shake most closely resembles a cross between marzipan and Froot Loops. It's extremely sweet, but that distinct flavor will take every Wisconsinite back to childhood. I always wonder why it hasn't caught on in the rest of the country.
If you have to choose another shake, go with hot fudge. Kopp's hot fudge is bittersweet and slightly salty, a perfect foil for the sweet vanilla custard in the shake. The fudge's depth of flavor makes it far superior to plain old chocolate syrup. You can order the malted version, but the one I ordered was only weakly malty. A bit more malt powder would help.
For something more exotic, try a shake made with one of the two flavors of the day, ranging from grasshopper fudge to pancakes and maple syrup. No matter what kind of shake (or sundae, or burger!) you get at Kopp's, it's pretty hard to go wrong.
