Highlights of Portland Cocktail Week included Pernod-Ricard's Welcome to Cocktail Week party, which was attended by the biggest names in the spirits business and was an absolute blast. Saturday's highlight was a battle between bartenders and cocktail-making robots. That's right. Cocktail-making robots. Here are a few of drinks I enjoyed most during Portland Cocktail Week, plus a few shots of Portland's (and the country's) top bartenders at work.
'Portland Oregon' on Serious Eats
One of my favorite neighborhood brunch joints here in Portland, Oregon is Toast. It's a cozy, boozy place—they give you the option of ordering your mimosa by the pint(!)—and they have a great breakfast cocktail menu. This drink is a slightly modified version of Toast's Apricot Fizz.
In Portland, Oregon—like in many cities—brunch and breakfast establishments abound. It's not that we're too lazy to make our own breakfast and brunch; it's just that there are so many good places to eat out, that why would we bother messing up our own kitchens with biscuits and gravy or eggs Benny? But now that I have the recipe for this delicious brunch drink, I may be brunching at home more often.
The Black Tiger just may be the most intense thing on Jim & Patty's extensive menu. The process begins with just about a pint of Prince Pückler's Gourmet Ice Cream made with Black Tiger coffee grounds. Black Tiger, for the uninitiated, is a proprietary coffee blend/roast specially prepared for Jim & Patty's (and Coffee People before them) which is notoriously higher in caffeine than your typical espresso blend. It's whirled together with whole milk and as many espresso shots as you desire.
