From the Blender: Creamy Orange-Tangerine Smoothie

It happened when we were standing in Whole Foods, staring down a wall of citrus. I filled up a bag of cute little stem-on tangerines and my husband said, "Oh good, you're getting more clementines." Now my husband isn't a complete citrus noob, but to the untrained eye clementines and tangerines do look pretty similar. And it occurred to me that there are many people in the world who see a round, orangey thing and call it an orange and don't think about the vast, varied world of citrus that actually exists.

Let's take tangerines as an example. They're similar to both mandarin oranges and clementines, but they're much, much easier to peel. I also find they're more flavorful, more sweet-tart, as if a rogue ruby grapefruit lies in the upper reaches of their family tree.

Freshly squeezed tangerine juice has a ton of flavor, so when it came time to make a smoothie, I knew that I wanted it to anchor the drink. To create a healthy creamiscle vibe, I added Greek yogurt and just a touch of honey. Freshly squeezed navel orange juice adds acidity and keeps it from being a dessert smoothie, while ice keeps the whole thing frosty and cold.
