Daniel Baird, bar manager at the newly-opened M.Y. China in San Francisco, has come a long way since he first got his start behind the bar. Baird's first gig was at a local watering hole in Harrisburg, PA. "I'd just gotten laid off, and I went to drown my sorrows," he tells us. "And they'd just laid off their bartender...four years later, I left."
M.Y. China, the first San Francisco restaurant from celebrity chef Martin Yan, is certainly a far cry from the "kind of redneck bar" Baird worked at in Harrisburg. The restaurant, which is located under the dome in the Westfield San Francisco Centre downtown, has gotten noticed for its noodle-pulling antics, its dim sum selection, and its cocktails, too.
"We wanted these cocktails to have a real theme, and to pair well with the food," says Baird, who relished the challenge of working to create cocktails that complemented the restaurant's elevated Chinese cuisine. Baird brought in Nate Bartell of Betelnut and Alan Chen of Presidio Social Club and Ice Cream Bar to help craft the menu.
The result is a 12-drink menu including Asian-inspired variations on classic cocktails, concocted to highlight the flavors of Yan's food. Take a peek at the drinks in the slideshow above.
