10 Great Outdoor Drinking Destinations in Los Angeles

[Photographs: Farley Elliott except where noted]

It's been a seriously hot summer in Los Angeles, which can make the usually enticing outdoors too much to even look at. Unless, of course, your reason for being outside involves a refreshing beverage. Whether it's a daytime respite from the heat of your apartment or a nighttime emergence with friends once the sun has gone down, LA is full of great drinking destinations.

So what makes a great outdoor drinking destination? It's more than plush chairs and a poke of skyline, that's for sure. Not every place on this list offers uninterrupted sightlines or breathtaking vistas, but they all have character to burn. Brick patios, communal tables, winding ivy; finding your preferred outdoor drinking spot is as much about what you want as what the places you're looking for offer. In LA, you're sure to find something that fits your whimsy.

And don't think for a second that this list is only relegated to the summer. With one exception, these drink spots are year-round affairs, which means you can sweat out the sunshine now with a crisp IPA or wait six months and settle in for a nighttime chill with a heavy German dunkel. The few truly cold LA days are never so unbearable that a rooftop fireplace (seriously) and a warm glass of whiskey can't get you toasty.
