Serious Eats: Drinks
First Look: Southern Pacific Brewing, San Francisco
Denizens of San Francisco's Mission district don't need more places to go for food and drink, but it seems likely that they'll make room for Southern Pacific Brewing. House-brewed beers and upscale pub food in an industrial-chic space, with the added bonus of biergarten seating outside for sunny day drinking? Yeah, that'll draw a crowd.
According to owner Chris Lawrence, San Francisco's newest brewhouse will concentrate on a lineup of clean, dry, easy-drinking West Coast-style beers. That doesn't mean that they'll skip out on the chance to produce some more unique pours though. Right now, the menu includes a pale ale, an IPA, a wit, a blonde, a black lager, and a porter, but Lawrence says a German-style schwarzbier is on the way. And with local winery A.P. Vin as a neighbor, Southern Pacific has already started experimenting with aging its beer in used wine barrels.
Southern Pacific comes to us from folks with lots of local beer experience. Lawrence worked over five years as a sales rep for Speakeasy Brewery. Co-owner Anthony LaVia, is a veteran of several bars and cafes in the area. They brought on Andy French, who Lawrence met at Speakeasy, as their brewer.
The space has been open since late January, and things have gotten off to a fast start. Lawrence says their first batch of IPA, about twelve barrels, sold out in ten days. And this week, with a crowd of beer geeks moving around the Bay Area for SF Beer Week, Southern Pacific is sure to attract plenty of attention. Lawrence took a little time out of this busy schedule to give Serious Eats a quick tour of the facility.
