Fresh is essential
In a drink so simple, fresh citrus is not debatable. Juice a lemon at the last possible moment.
Add 3/4 ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice to a cocktail shaker.
Add 3/4 ounce simple syrup to the shaker.
Add 1/2 ounce cognac such as Pierre Ferrand. Then fill shaker with ice.
Give it a little shake
Shake briefly—you don't want to introduce too much water through dilution.
Strain and pour
Strain into a rocks-filled highball glass.
Garnish with orange wedge, brandied cherry, and a straw, then enjoy!
