Have You Ever Tried to Quit Diet Soda?
As far as vices go, I think my diet soda habit-verging-on-addiction is a pretty innocuous one. (At least, there are clearer consequences to, say, cigarettes or gambling or binge doughnut-eating.)
Still, there are times when it can get out of hand. I've easily consumed as much aspartame as some lab rats. As neither dietician nor chemist I won't venture any opinion on the adverse health effects of diet soda. But it sure as hell isn't good for you. And whenever my daily consumption creeps up toward the 4+ soda-per-day level, I cut myself off.
I mean, there's nothing to like about caffeine headaches or sugar cravings or the five cans of aluminum waste I generate or the $10 I might drop on soda in a day. And I don't like the idea of being dependent on anything, so as soon as I start craving soda on a daily basis I'll stop drinking it entirely.* But after a week or two or three I might get thirsty and see a soda around. And think hey, what's wrong with one soda, really? And then it starts again.
*Don't tell Drinks editor Maggie. I'm pretty sure she doesn't want me off diet soda.
Anyone else out there soda-addicted? And have you ever tried to kick the habit?
