Pie You Can Drink: Maine Root Pumpkin Pie Soda

20111013pumpkinsodamaineroot.jpg

Looking for something for the kids to drink while you're celebrating fall with pumpkin beer? This seasonal soda from Portland, Maine's Maine Root smells like freshly grated nutmeg and clove, and tastes somewhere between cream soda and ginger beer with enough spices to evoke your favorite fall squash pie. It's sweet and bubbly (and maybe too sweet for some) but would be fun to drink alongside a bowl of pumpkin chili on Halloween night (or with a turkey sandwich the day after Thanksgiving.)

There isn't any pumpkin in the soda itself (just water, organic cane juice, and spices) but this bright orange soda still tastes festive and autumnal, and could be a fun base for a non-alcoholic Halloween party punch—mix with apple cider and a little cranberry juice and lemon (float whole cranberries on top), or try stirring with grapefruit juice and a little maple syrup.

Available at Whole Foods and wherever Maine Root sodas are sold.
