If you're in the NYC area and you've been keeping up with The Cider Press here on Serious Eats, but you're still hesitant to trade in your grapes or grains for apples, then consider next week's New York Cider Week an crash course in cider that you shouldn't miss.
Cider week is just one aspect of Glynwood's Apple Project, an ongoing program to preserve Hudson Valley orchards through the production of cider and spirits. The project, spearheaded by Glynwood's Sarah Grady, aims to celebrate regional orchards with a "cider route" through the Hudson Valley as well as encourage the growth and improvement of the cider industry through an exchange program with cider makers from Le Perche, France.
Cider Week is a seven day celebration of apple fermentables featuring tastings, pairings, and seminars throughout New York City. Local cideries such as Farnum Hill, West County, Eve's Cidery, Foggy Ridge, Slyboro and Bellwether will be featured alongside some of the finest international ciders from France and Spain at shops and restaurants throughout the city. In addition, many of these cidermakers will in town, hosting seminars and workshops to take your home cider making or mixology skills to the next level.

Sunday, October 16th
A Cider Revival at New Amsterdam Market
Sunday, October 16th, 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The flagship event of Cider Week, this is your opportunity to takes six different ciders side by side along with a selection of heirloom apples rarely seen outside of the orchard. Marlow and Sons will be on hand serving up seasonal bites paired with ciders by Farnum Hill, West County, Eve's Cidery, Foggy Ridge, Slyboro, and Bellwether. Ice Cider Tasting
Tuesday, October 18th, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Ice cider is a higher alcohol still cider made by freezing apple juice and fermenting the concentrated off-runnings. Traditionally a Canadian beverage, ice cider is experiencing a bit of a renaissance in the colder northern New England states. Leading the movement is Vermont's Eden Ice Cider, whose owner will be on hand to share and discuss her ice ciders along side those of her peers. While ice cider is fantastic on its own, this is also your chance to taste Eden's Orleans Ice Cider, a Lillet-like drink made by infusing the cider with herbs. $25, event website. Home Cider Making with Farnum Hill
Tuesday, October 18th, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Frequent readers of The Cider Press are familiar with New Hampshire's Farnum Hill Ciders. For over 30 years, Stephen Wood and Louisa Spencer's ciders have been at the forefront of the American cider revival. At this event, participants will get the chance to taste the final blends of Farnum Hill ciders alongside their individual components in order to gain insight into the cider blending process. Wednesday, October 19th
Wednesday, October 19th, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. While Astor Wines will host cider tastings all week long, this featured event is an all-out celebration of fermented apple beverages. Guest will have the opportunity to taste Spanish Calvados, American ciders, apple wine, perry, and even a few fall cocktails alongside fresh apples, apple desserts, and "dip your own" caramel apples. The Astor Center staff will also be holding seminars on cider cocktails and pairings throughout the evening so you can look like an apple expert at your next party. $25, event website. The Big Apple: Historic New York Cocktails Featuring Local Apple Alcohols

Intro to Cider with West County Ciders Saturday, October 22nd, 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. This free tasting with Field Maloney from West County Ciders in Massachusetts is our top pick in the week's tastings. West County Ciders is responsible for inspiring many of today's newer cider makers and has been producing world-class ciders for over 25 years. Field Maloney will share a few of her ciders from heirloom varietals such as Roxbury Russet and Pippin and talk about the long, hard road of cider awareness in America. Dinner with the Cidermakers: Featuring the Women of Craft Cider Tuesday, November 8th, 6:30 p.m. If an entire week of cider-fueled events has left you wanting more then make reservations for this this post-week dinner.
