In the fall, I trade in iced tea for warmer lattes, more specifically matcha lattes, a longtime obsession of mine. The best ones came from Tafu, where they topped each heady concoction with whipped cream and kuromitsu or even silky housemade chocolate syrup if desired. But with Tafu closed, I set out to find the best spots for matcha lattes in NYC.
Pay a visit to Cha-An where matcha lattes comes with a scoop of tsubushian (sweetened red bean paste). When stirred into the drink, the paste acts as a sweeter and also provides textural contrast. Both spoon and straw are recommended for this warming drink.
At Bosie Tea Parlor (pictured above), matcha lattes boast a frothy top and arrive pure and unsweetened. I like it best when made with soymilk, which adds a smooth nutty richness.
For matcha lattes to go, consider Takahachi Bakery in Tribeca—they make the "lightest" latte of the trio, but the matcha flavor is just as pure and unfussy.
