Shiso (also known as perilla) is one my favorite herbs. It's most often found in Japanese cuisine, but is also becoming a popular addition to drinks, both alcoholic and non-. At Smorgasburg recently, Brooklyn Soda works was serving Watermelon-Shiso Sodas ($4). Combining my favorite summertime drink with my favorite herb in the form of soda? Heaven indeed!
It's a thirst quencher, the minty essence of shiso taking the already refreshing, not too sweet soda up another notch. You taste the bright, clean shiso with equal potency as the watermelon, and it's a wonderufl pairing—perhaps watermelon and shiso are the new strawberries and mint?
