Ferch's in Greendale has the feel—and decor—of an old fashioned soda fountain. You can get your phosphate or fountain soda flavored with dozens of different syrups, from black licorice to guava. All of those same syrups can also go into their frozen custard shakes. With the option of mixing in real fruit, cookies, or other chunky bits, there are about a million possible shake flavors.

I was drawn to the New York cheesecake flavor, adding rich buttery notes to the already creamy vanilla custard. Why go halfway, right? I also added strawberries, figuring I'd try and recreate a favorite dessert in milkshake form. The strawberries were chunky and added just enough sour contrast to the cheesecake's richness.

A pineapple shake included canned pineapple chunks that became a icy from the cold custard. The pineapple flavor was light and refreshing, perfect for a hot day. Both shakes were on the thin side, making the spoon a necessity only for the chunks of fruit left at the bottom of the cup.
