Hangover Helper: Eggs Rancheros at Five Points, NYC
The wood-oven roasted Eggs Rancheros ($15) at Five Points on Great Jones Street is just what the doctor ordered: a big mess of comfort food served in a bowl big enough to send you right back to bed for a post-brunch-nap. Corn tortillas, chopped tomatoes, sharp Vermont aged cheddar, and a handful of eggs are tossed in the sweet-tart tomatillo salsa. Pretty much anything would be delicious in this sauce, but the rich cheese and crispy-edged eggs are a good choice, made even better by a mountain of crisp tortilla chips. I wish the egg yolks had been runnier, though; you may want to request that they spend a little less time in the inferno.
Wash it down with the Bloody Rosemary ($10) if you're a fan of the piney herb; the scent of a whole rosemary stalk might be enough, but this drink is based on rosemary-infused vodka, and it's potent. Served with celery and a salted rim, the rosemary balances the tartness of the tomato juice and the subtly spicy burn. Mimosas and tequila- or vodka-spiked citrus and cranberry "Morning Punch" are also available by the pitcher.
