All the way in the back of Lifethyme, a health food market in the West Village, is a juice and smoothie stand. The all-fruit and vegetable juices are ordinary, but Coconut Smoothies ($7.50) stands out from the rest. These smoothies are fruit-based, your pick from fruit choices including blueberries, strawberries, and apples. Next comes the awesome part: a whole coconut blended in with the smoothie. It's not every day you get a whole coconut in your smoothie! The guy behind the counter hacks open a fresh coconut, pours the coconut water into the blender, then spoons out every bit of the coconut meat, and blends it with fruits.
Coconut offers the smoothie a mild, sweet, and somewhat nutty dimension—elements that elevate any smoothie. They can often be aggressive when scooping out the meat, sometimes scraping too deep, picking up part of the coconut shell which then gets blended into your drink. This leaves gritty, hard to digest bits. So ask them to use a gentle hand with scraping the meat, and everything should be just fine.
